The Site is a significant example of a mid-altitude wetland which supports threatened endemic species, wetland vegetation communities and an unusual phytoplankton assemblage. Endemic species present include the nationally endangered golden galaxias (Galaxias auratus) that only occurs naturally in the lakes within and adjacent to the Site, and the associated streams and intermittent marshes. As such, the Site provides important spawning, foraging, and refuge habitat for the species. Fifty-two species of plants have been recorded in the wetlands of the Reserve, including the rare soft-twig rush (Baumea arthrophylla). The Site is used for recreational fishing.
