The Site is an extensive complex of salt pans and marshes on the Mediterranean coast. The coastal part, separated from the sea by sand dunes and beaches, was converted in 1900 for intensive salt production, while the inland part is less saline and transformed, featuring marshes and temporary pools. These two different habitat types contribute to the wetland’s high biodiversity value: 32 wetland plant and animal species found here are threatened and ten species are endemic. Of these, the wetland hosts one of the world’s most important populations of the endangered Aphanius iberus (Spanish toothcarp, locally known as fartet). In addition, waterbird populations are significant, with the wetland hosting internationally important numbers of breeding little tern (Sternula albifrons) and wintering greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). A management plan has been implemented since 2010.
