The Site is located on Queensland’s central coast and features habitats representative of the major coastal communities of northern Australia’s wet-dry tropics. The Site is contiguous with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the Bowling Green Bay Fish Habitat Reserve. This wetland complex includes rocky marine shores, estuarine waters, intertidal mud and sand flats, and mangroves, creating a dynamic interplay of freshwater and saltwater systems. This enables 13 species of fish, including the vulnerable bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), to migrate between sea and freshwater areas to access spawning and nursery grounds. Seagrass beds in the Site provide foraging habitat for the endangered green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the vulnerable dugong (Dugong dugon). Additionally, the Site is a regionally important nesting and feeding habitat for migratory waterbirds. In total, over 870 species are supported by this Site. It is culturally and spiritually significant for the Bindal People and other First Nations Peoples, and is also important for scientific research and recreational activities.
